Ways to save at YouTube Premium

Ordered by what each is typically worth to a regular shopper — the biggest saving first.

  1. Share Family with the people you live with

About $4.50 an accountLow effortHouseholds of 2 to 6

Family costs $26.99 a month for the family manager plus up to five members aged 13 and over — about $4.50 each when it's full. Everyone has to live at the family manager's residential address, and nobody can join if they've switched family groups in the past 12 months.[1, 4]

    1. The family manager (18 or over) buys the plan and sets the household location.
    2. They invite up to five people from the same home.
    3. Each member accepts the invitation from their own account.
  2. Pay for the year upfront

$31.89 less than 12 monthly paymentsLow effortIndividual subscribers

The Individual 1-year plan is $159.99, against $191.88 for twelve months at $15.99. It's a pre-paid plan: you pay upfront, it doesn't renew automatically, and you can hold up to 24 months of pre-paid access. It's only available to individual users and can't be paused.[1, 2]

  3. Switch to Student while you're enrolled

    $8.99 a month — $7 less than IndividualSome effortFull-time students

Student memberships cost $8.99 a month and are open to full-time students at approved higher-education institutions. Eligibility is checked every year by a third-party verification service, and the student price lasts for up to four years.[1, 2]

  4. Take Premium Lite if you mostly watch regular videos

$8.99 a monthLow effortViewers who don't need music or Shorts covered

Premium Lite costs $8.99 a month. Its benefits apply to most non-music videos — not to music or Shorts — and ads may still appear when you search or browse. If that's how you use YouTube, it costs $7 a month less than Individual.[1]

  5. Pause for up to six months instead of cancelling

No charge while pausedLow effortAnyone taking a break

You can pause for 1 to 6 months. The pause starts after your current billing cycle, you aren't charged while paused, and your downloads are kept (though locked) until you resume — at the then-current price. Annual plans and Apple-billed memberships can't be paused, and pausing a Family plan pauses it for everyone.[3]

5 rules · youtube.com, United States

The rules that decide what you pay

What YouTube Premium says about plans and prices, trials, pausing and cancelling, family plan and student and pre-paid plans — the details that turn a good deal into a bad one, or the other way round.

Plans and prices

Individual $15.99, Family $26.99, Student $8.99, Premium Lite $8.99 a month.

The Individual plan is also sold as a 1-year plan for $159.99. Premium includes YouTube Music Premium, the separate ad-free music app.[1]

Trials

A $0 first month, for eligible new members only.

Monthly plans bill on a recurring basis once the trial ends, and YouTube says it reminds you 7 days before the trial finishes.[1]

Pausing and cancelling

Cancel anytime, or pause for 1 to 6 months.

A pause starts after your current billing cycle; while it lasts, you and any family members lose Premium benefits and aren't charged. You can cancel at any time, including while paused. Pausing isn't available on annual plans or to people billed through Apple.[1, 3]

Family plan

One household: the manager plus up to 5 members aged 13+.

Members must live at the family manager's residential address; if YouTube can't confirm someone's household membership, their Premium access may be paused. Each person can switch family groups only once every 12 months, and only the manager can buy the plan or change the group.[1, 4]

Student and pre-paid plans

Student: full-time, up to 4 years, verified yearly. Pre-paid: no auto-renewal.

Pre-paid plans are bought upfront for a set period, are for individual users only, can't be paused, and you can hold up to 24 months of pre-paid access.[2]

4 catches in the fine print

Watch out for

Where shoppers lose the saving they thought they had.

  1. Pausing pauses the whole family

If the family manager pauses the membership, every member on the plan loses Premium benefits until it resumes.[3]

  2. Family means one home

Members must live at the manager's address, and YouTube may pause Premium for anyone whose household it can't confirm. It's not a way to share with friends elsewhere.[4]

  3. Premium Lite isn't Premium

Lite doesn't cover music or Shorts, and ads may appear while you search or browse. Check how you use YouTube before taking the cheaper plan.[1]

  4. The annual plan simply ends

The 1-year plan doesn't renew on its own — good for avoiding surprise charges, but set a reminder so you choose what comes next before it runs out.[1, 2]
