Spotify Promo Codes, Student & Family Deals

Spotify doesn't do coupon codes — the real savings are in which Premium plan you pick, who you share it with, and how you handle the free month.

Does Spotify have promo codes?

Not in the usual sense. Spotify's discounts are the trials and promotions it advertises itself, and on Student, Duo and Family its terms say no other discounts apply unless advertised. The codes you can redeem are from Spotify gift cards, at spotify.com/account/redeem.[4, 6]

Our verdict

If you live with others, Premium Family ($21.99 for up to six people) or Duo ($18.99 for two) costs far less per person than Individual at $12.99; students should take Premium Student at $6.99, which includes Hulu (With Ads). Use the free month only if you've never had Premium — and don't cancel it early, because a cancelled free trial ends straight away.

Ways to save at Spotify

Ordered by what each is typically worth to a regular shopper — the biggest saving first.

  1. Share Premium Family or Duo with the people you live with

From about $3.67 a personLow effortHouseholds of 2 to 6

Premium Family costs $21.99 a month for up to six people — about $3.67 each when the plan is full — and Duo is $18.99 for two, about $9.50 each. Everyone keeps their own account. The catch: every member must live at the plan manager's address and verify it, members can switch household plans only once every 12 months, and only the plan manager gets the plan's audiobook listening time.[1, 3, 4]

    1. One person — the plan manager — signs up and pays.
    2. Each member joins with their own account and enters the same home address.
    3. Members under 13 can join Family too, with parental controls.
  2. Switch to Premium Student if you're at college or university

$6.99 a month, Hulu includedSome effortStudents at accredited US colleges and universities

Premium Student costs $6.99 a month and includes Hulu's With Ads plan at no extra cost. You verify through SheerID, re-verify every 12 months, and can keep the discount for up to four years. Hulu is included only if your Hulu account is new, returning, or already billed by Hulu — some existing Hulu plans don't qualify.[1, 2, 4]

    1. Start from the Student plan on Spotify's Premium page.
    2. Complete the SheerID form — you may need to sign in to your school portal or upload proof of enrollment.
  3. Take the free month — and set a reminder instead of cancelling early

One month of Premium for $0Low effortPeople who've never had Premium

Individual and Student come with one month for $0 if you haven't tried Premium before. Some trials need payment details; billing then starts the day after the trial ends at the standard price. Cancelling a free trial ends it immediately and it can't be reactivated, so set a reminder for the last day rather than cancelling on day one.[1, 4, 5]

  4. Drop to Spotify Free in months you don't need Premium

The monthly fee, while you're offSome effortAnyone who listens less at times

When you cancel a paid plan, Premium continues until your next billing date and your account then switches to the free, ad-supported service. Your playlists and saved music stay, so you can come back to Premium later without rebuilding your library.[5]

  5. Redeem any gift card you already have

Up to 18 months of PremiumLow effortAnyone holding a Spotify gift card

Spotify no longer sells gift cards, but existing ones still redeem at spotify.com/account/redeem. They pay only for Premium Individual — not Student, Duo or Family — can't be used on trial offers, and you can stack up to 18 months of Premium time.[6]

5 rules · spotify.com, United States

The rules that decide what you pay

What Spotify says about plans and prices, trials and renewal, cancellation, household plans and student plan — the details that turn a good deal into a bad one, or the other way round.

Plans and prices

Individual $12.99, Student $6.99, Duo $18.99, Family $21.99 a month.

Individual, Duo and Family include 15 hours of audiobook listening a month (on Duo and Family, for the plan manager only). Student includes Hulu (With Ads), subject to eligibility.[1, 3]

Trials and renewal

Generally for people who've never had Premium or a trial.

Some trials are advertised to past subscribers whose subscription ended before a set date. Where a trial needs payment details, they must be a payment method you give Spotify directly — not a prepaid or gift card — and billing starts the day after the trial at the current price unless you cancel first. Paid subscriptions renew until you cancel.[4]

Cancellation

Premium stays until your next billing date, then you're on Free.

Cancelling a $0 trial switches you to Free straight away, and that trial can't be reactivated. If you pay through a partner such as a phone or internet provider, you cancel through that partner — the details are in the Payment section of Manage your plan.[4, 5]

Household plans

Duo and Family members must live together and verify it.

Members enter the plan manager's home address when they join. The plan manager is the only person who signs up and pays, can add or remove members, and can't join another plan. Members can move between household plans only once every 12 months.[3, 4]

Student plan

Verified through SheerID, renewed every 12 months, for up to 4 years.

One student subscription per account, at an eligible accredited higher-education institution. Spotify can add or remove partner services such as Hulu at any time, and no other discounts apply unless Spotify advertises them.[2, 4]

4 catches in the fine print

Watch out for

Where shoppers lose the saving they thought they had.

  1. Cancelling a free trial ends it at once

Unlike a paid plan, which runs to the end of the billing period, a cancelled $0 trial switches you to Free immediately and can't be restarted. Cancel on the last day, not the first.[4, 5]

  2. Trials don't accept prepaid or gift cards

When a trial asks for payment details, Spotify requires a current payment method given directly to Spotify. Prepaid cards and gift cards don't count.[4]

  3. Family and Duo check where you live

Every member must live at the plan manager's address and verify it, and can switch household plans only once a year. Sharing with friends elsewhere breaks the terms.[3, 4]

  4. Audiobook hours belong to the plan manager

On Duo and Family, only the plan manager gets the included audiobook listening time. Other members have to buy hours separately.[3]
