Netflix Promo Codes & Cheapest Ways to Watch

Netflix has no free trial, and the only codes it takes are gift cards. What you pay comes down to the plan you pick, whether your phone plan already covers it, and knowing when to pause.

Does Netflix have promo codes?

The codes you can redeem with Netflix are from Netflix gift cards, at netflix.com/redeem. The bigger savings come from the plan you choose, phone or internet packages that include Netflix, and pausing instead of cancelling.[1, 3, 5]

Our verdict

Unless you need more than two screens or no ads, Standard with ads at $8.99 costs $11 a month less than Standard at $19.99. Check whether your T-Mobile or Verizon package already includes Netflix, and pause for up to three months instead of cancelling between shows.

Ways to save at Netflix

Ordered by what each is typically worth to a regular shopper — the biggest saving first.

  1. Choose Standard with ads unless you need more

$11 a month less than StandardLow effortHouseholds watching on 1–2 screens

Standard with ads costs $8.99 a month against $19.99 for Standard and $26.99 for Premium. It streams in Full HD on two devices at a time and allows downloads on two devices. You give up ad-free viewing, and ad plans can't add extra members — but for many households that's $132 a year saved.[1, 2]

  2. Check whether your phone or internet package includes Netflix

Netflix included in a bill you already payLow effortT-Mobile and Verizon customers

Some T-Mobile and Verizon packages include a Netflix membership or let you add one. If you already have Netflix, link your existing account when you activate the package — that's what stops Netflix charging your old payment method. If you pay through Apple, you also have to cancel the Apple subscription after linking, or Apple keeps billing you.[7, 8]

    1. Ask your provider whether your plan includes Netflix.
    2. Activate through the provider (T-Mobile: the T-Life app) and sign in with your existing Netflix email.
    3. Apple-billed? Cancel the Netflix subscription in your Apple account after linking.
  3. Pause between shows instead of cancelling

Up to 3 months without payingLow effortAnyone who watches in bursts

Netflix lets you pause your membership one month at a time, for up to three months in total. If you do cancel, you keep watching until the end of the period you've paid for, and Netflix keeps your viewing activity, recommendations and ratings for 24 months — so coming back later costs nothing but the new month.[3]

  4. Add an extra member instead of paying for a second account

From $7.99 a month for someone outside your homeSome effortSharing with someone who lives elsewhere

On Standard or Premium, the account owner can add an extra member — $7.99 a month with ads or $9.99 without — for someone who doesn't live with them. They get their own profile and password and watch on one device at a time. They must be in the same country where the account owner signed up, and the owner pays: cash, direct debit and gift cards can't buy the slot.[1, 2]

6 rules · netflix.com, United States

The rules that decide what you pay

What Netflix says about plans and prices, changing plans, cancellation, extra members, gift cards and packages — the details that turn a good deal into a bad one, or the other way round.

Plans and prices

Standard with ads $8.99, Standard $19.99, Premium $26.99 a month.

Standard with ads and Standard stream in Full HD on 2 devices at a time; Premium streams in 4K with HDR on 4 and adds downloads on 6 devices and spatial audio. The Basic plan has been discontinued. Taxes may be added depending on where you live.[1]

Changing plans

Upgrades start at once; downgrades on your next billing date.

A higher-priced plan takes effect immediately and can move your billing date or add a prorated charge. A lower-priced plan starts on your next billing date, and you keep the higher plan's features until then.[6]

Cancellation

Access continues to the end of the period you've paid for.

Cancel from the Manage your membership page and confirm with Finish Cancellation — signing out or deleting the app doesn't cancel. If you pay through a partner, cancel with them. Viewing activity, ratings and game saves are kept for 24 months after the account closes.[3]

Extra members

Standard or Premium only, same country, one device at a time.

Ad-supported plans and some partner-billed accounts can't add extra members. An extra member with ads watches in up to 1080p and can download on one device, 15 downloads a month; an ad-free extra member gets the owner's video quality. The owner can swap the extra member up to twice a calendar month.[2]

Gift cards

Redeem at netflix.com/redeem; they don't expire and can't be refunded.

Gift cards pay only for a Netflix streaming subscription and can't be reloaded. If you're billed through Apple, you have to cancel, wait for the account to close and restart with the gift card; on a phone or internet package, the balance waits until your account is no longer linked to the package.[5]

Packages

Your provider covers the main plan; extra members cost extra.

A package covers only the main Netflix plan — extra members need a secondary payment method such as a credit card. On a T-Mobile package you can't move below the plan it includes, and paying for a higher plan adds the difference to your next bill.[7, 8]

4 catches in the fine print

Watch out for

Where shoppers lose the saving they thought they had.

  1. Deleting the app doesn't cancel

Netflix keeps billing until you finish the cancellation on the Manage your membership page — signing out or deleting the app changes nothing.[3]

  2. Ad plans can't share with an extra member

If you plan to add someone outside your home, you need Standard or Premium. Extra members can't be added to ad-supported plans.[2]

  3. Apple billing complicates gift cards and packages

Apple-billed accounts can't use a gift card without cancelling and restarting, and switching to a phone package means cancelling the Apple subscription yourself — or paying twice.[5, 7, 8]

  4. Upgrading can charge you straight away

Moving to a higher plan takes effect immediately and may bring a prorated charge or a new billing date. Downgrades only start on your next billing date.[6]
