Udemy Coupon Codes, Sales & Refund Rules

Udemy course prices shift with its own promotions and with instructor coupons, so savings come from buying during a sale, entering codes on Udemy.com, not in the app, and asking for a partial refund when a course bought in the last 30 days gets cheaper.

Does Udemy have coupon codes?

Yes, of two kinds. Udemy's own codes come from its promotions and apply automatically to eligible courses and subscriptions at checkout, while instructors create codes for their own courses that you type into the cart on Udemy.com. We list only codes Udemy publishes itself.[5, 6]

Our verdict

Look for a Udemy promotion before paying a course's full price: its sale codes apply automatically at checkout, while instructor coupon codes go into the cart on Udemy.com in a browser, since the app has nowhere to enter them. If a course you bought gets cheaper, request a partial refund within 30 days; on Personal Plan, cancel before the next billing date, because Udemy.com subscription payments aren't refunded unless the law requires it.

Ways to save at Udemy

Ordered by what each is typically worth to a regular shopper — the biggest saving first.

  1. Wait for a Udemy promotion before you buy

Sale prices on opted-in coursesLow effortCourse and subscription buyers

Udemy says it frequently runs promotions on udemy.com, and their coupon codes apply automatically to eligible courses and subscriptions at checkout. Its promotions vary in length — some may run for several days, others for multiple weeks — and not every course takes part, because instructors decide whether to opt in. Udemy suggests turning on promotional emails so you hear about sales, and logging in to see the promotion available to your account.[5, 7, 8]

    1. Turn on promotional emails in your Udemy notification settings.
    2. Log in before comparing prices: some promotions are for new users only.
    3. Check the label on the course page or at checkout to see whether a sale code applied.
  2. Enter instructor coupon codes in the cart on Udemy.com

The instructor's own discountLow effortLearners with a code from an instructor

Instructors create coupon codes for their own courses, and Udemy says they usually share them in promotional announcements or on their own social media. In your cart on Udemy.com, type the code under Checkout where it says Enter Coupon and click Apply; a link from the instructor with the code built in applies it for you. You can enter every code you have and Udemy applies the valid ones to eligible items, but the mobile app takes no codes and instructor codes don't work on subscriptions.[5, 6]

    1. Add the course to your cart on Udemy.com in a browser.
    2. Under Checkout, type the code in Enter Coupon and click Apply.
    3. Check that the code shows under Promotions before you pay.
  3. Ask for a partial refund if the price drops within 30 days

Part of what you paid, backSome effortCourses bought in the last 30 days

If a coupon would now take a course you bought below what you paid, Udemy's coupon FAQ points you to a partial refund request, open to eligible courses bought in the last 30 days. Start it from Purchase history in a browser and pick a partial-refund reason rather than a full refund; Udemy may ask for a screenshot of the discounted price. For most payment methods the partial refund goes back to the method you paid with; Apple and Google Play purchases get it as Udemy credits.[2, 3, 5]

    1. Open Purchase history on Udemy.com and click Request Refund under the course.
    2. Choose a partial-refund reason and describe the lower price you found.
    3. Keep a screenshot of the discounted price in case Udemy asks for it.
  4. Weigh Personal Plan against buying courses one by one

Unlimited plan courses while you paySome effortLearners planning several courses

Personal Plan gives unlimited access to the subscription's courses while you keep paying, whereas a course you buy keeps lifetime access whatever price you paid, as long as your account is in good standing and Udemy keeps the course's license. If a promotion offers you a free trial, its length, end date and the fee that follows appear on your Subscriptions page, and you can cancel during the trial without being charged. Sale codes from Udemy's promotions can apply to subscriptions; instructor coupon codes can't.[5, 7, 10, 11, 13]

    1. Compare the fee on your Subscriptions page with the courses you'd otherwise buy.
    2. If you start a promotional trial, note the end date shown on the Subscriptions page.
    3. Click Cancel trial before it ends if you don't want to keep paying.
  5. Buy certification exam vouchers through Udemy

Savings on certification exam feesSome effortLearners in select certification courses

In select certification courses — for AWS, CompTIA, Linux and Microsoft exams — Udemy sells exam vouchers, and the course's Overview tab shows the voucher price with the saving you get by buying on Udemy.com. For some exams you can add Second Chance or Retake Assurance, an extra attempt bought upfront for less than a new voucher, but only at the time of the original purchase. Vouchers are non-refundable, expire as stated at purchase, work only in the region where you bought them, and Udemy coupons don't apply to them; Udemy says they aren't available in every region.[8, 16]

6 rules · udemy.com, United States

The rules that decide what you pay

What Udemy says about course refunds, refund credits, cancellation, subscription refunds, free trials and sale prices — the details that turn a good deal into a bad one, or the other way round.

Course refunds

Eligible courses can be refunded within 30 days of purchase.

Request it from Purchase history or the course player in a browser — not in the mobile app. Most refunds go back to the original payment method and can take 5 to 10 business days or longer to post; one asked for within 24 hours of buying may be handled as a purchase reversal instead. After 30 days no refund is due, unless the course is disabled for legal or policy reasons.[2, 4, 8]

Refund credits

Some purchases are refunded only as Udemy credits.

That covers App Store (iOS) purchases and certain bank and cash-transfer payments, and you can choose credits yourself, which reach your account as soon as the refund is processed. Credits are applied to your next eligible purchase on the website, can't be used in the mobile or TV apps, may expire and have no cash value.[1, 2, 8]

Cancellation

Cancel Personal Plan at any time on your Subscriptions page.

On Udemy.com, open the Subscriptions page from the menu at the top right and click Cancel subscription; you keep access until the last day of the billing period shown there. Subscriptions started in the iOS or Android app are cancelled through Apple or Google Play, and Udemy can't cancel them for you.[10]

Subscription refunds

No refunds on Udemy.com subscriptions unless the law requires one.

Payments for subscription plans bought on Udemy.com don't carry the 30-day guarantee and aren't refunded, in full or in part, and cancelling doesn't return fees already paid. Udemy honors refund windows only where the law sets one — the United States isn't among the countries it lists as examples — and app store subscriptions follow Apple's or Google Play's refund rules.[1, 8, 12]

Free trials

A promotional trial becomes a paid plan unless you cancel it.

Free trials may come with some Udemy promotions; the trial's length, end date and the fee that follows show on your Subscriptions page, where Cancel trial ends it without a charge. You can't skip the trial or pay early, and anyone who has had Personal Plan before, monthly or annual, may not qualify for a promotional trial.[8, 10, 11]

Sale prices

You pay the price shown when you check out.

Udemy runs sales for set periods, and prices can differ when you're logged in because some promotions are only for new users; your account's currency is initially set by where you created it. Udemy chooses which Deals Program courses to discount and sets the sale price — its Promotions Policy sets a $9.99 minimum (or the local equivalent), though Udemy may still sell below it — and instructors can opt out of the program.[8, 9, 15]

5 catches in the fine print

Watch out for

Where shoppers lose the saving they thought they had.

  1. Coupon codes don't work in the app

Udemy's mobile app bills through Apple and Google Play, so there's no way to enter a coupon there, and app prices can differ slightly from Udemy.com. Buy on the website in a browser; the course then shows up in the app too.[5, 7]

  2. A well-used course may not be refundable

Udemy can limit or deny a refund if a notable amount of the course was consumed or downloaded first, if you've already refunded the same course, or if you've asked for excessive refunds. Decide early whether a course suits you.[1, 8]

  3. Refund credits stay on the website

Credits from a refund are applied to your next eligible purchase on Udemy.com, can't be spent in the mobile or TV apps, may expire and can't be turned into cash. If you'd rather have your money back, pick the original payment method when it's offered.[2, 8]

  4. Personal Plan payments aren't refunded

Unlike single courses, subscriptions bought on Udemy.com have no 30-day guarantee and no full or partial refunds unless the law requires them. If you're finished, cancel before the next billing date.[1, 8]

  5. A refund request can't be undone

Once submitted, a refund goes straight to your bank or payment processor and can't be cancelled. You can buy the course again, but your progress in it won't come back.[4]

Udemy savings FAQ

Yes, of two kinds. Udemy's own codes come from its promotions and apply automatically to eligible courses and subscriptions at checkout, while instructors create codes for their own courses that you type into the cart on Udemy.com. We list only codes Udemy publishes itself.[5, 6]

Add the course to your cart on Udemy.com in a browser, type the code under Checkout where it says Enter Coupon, and click Apply; applied codes show under Promotions. A link from an instructor with the code built in applies it for you, and the mobile app doesn't accept codes.[5, 6]

Udemy names a few reasons: the promotion has ended, you're in the mobile app, or the instructor hasn't opted the course into Udemy's promotions, which shows as a notice that the course isn't included. Instructor codes can also expire or reach their maximum number of redemptions, so ask the instructor if you're unsure of a code's terms.[5]

Eligible courses can be refunded within 30 days of purchase, requested from Purchase history or the course player in a browser. Some purchases, including App Store ones, are refunded only as Udemy credits, and Udemy can refuse a refund when much of the course was used or refunds look excessive.[1, 2]

You can ask for a partial refund on eligible courses bought in the last 30 days; Udemy's coupon FAQ points there when a code would undercut what you paid. Choose a partial-refund reason on the refund page, and be ready to send a screenshot of the lower price.[3, 5]

Udemy may offer free trials as part of promotions; the length, end date and the fee that follows appear on your Subscriptions page. You can cancel during the trial without being charged, otherwise it converts to the subscription fee plus tax, and past Personal Plan users may not qualify.[10, 11]

On Udemy.com, open your Subscriptions page from the menu at the top right and click Cancel subscription; access continues until the last day of the billing period. If you subscribed in the iOS or Android app, cancel through Apple or Google Play.[10]

Subscriptions bought on Udemy.com aren't refundable, in full or in part, unless the law requires it, and the United States isn't among the countries Udemy lists as examples. For subscriptions bought in the mobile apps, refund requests go to Apple or Google Play.[1, 12]

Udemy's coupon FAQ names two sources of discounts, its own promotions and instructor coupon codes, and doesn't mention a student discount. Udemy also has free courses, though they come without a certificate of completion.[5, 13, 14]
