Microsoft Store Promo Codes & Student Discount

Microsoft's promo codes are single-use unless their terms say otherwise, so plan around its programs: up to 10% off select devices for students, educators and military, refurbished Surface up to 30% below new, trade-in cash back and 60-day price protection.

Does Microsoft Store have promo codes?

Microsoft does issue promotion codes for its online store, each tied to one promotion with its own terms and end date. Unless those terms say otherwise, a code works once, not on shipping or tax, and may not combine with other offers — and it can only be entered while signed in, not in guest checkout. The savings shown on Microsoft's deals page are price cuts, refurbished devices and trade-in offers.[1, 10, 11]

Our verdict

Students, parents, educators and military families should check eligibility with a personal Microsoft account before shopping — the up to 10% discount then shows by itself on select devices. A trade-in can add up to $500 cash back on a new Surface Laptop or Surface Pro through December 29, 2026, and physical products bought October 1 to December 2, 2026 can be returned — or adjusted if Microsoft cuts the price — until January 31, 2027.

Ways to save at Microsoft Store

Ordered by what each is typically worth to a regular shopper — the biggest saving first.

  1. Check the student and military discount before you buy

Up to 10% off select devicesLow effortStudents, parents, educators, military and their families

Microsoft's special discount covers select physical products such as consumer Surface devices and accessories. It's open to students from primary school through higher education (home school included) and their parents, to faculty working in education, and to active, former and retired military members and their immediate families. Check with the email of your personal Microsoft account — not a work or school account — and you're approved right away; while you're signed in, the cart applies whichever is lower: the discount or the sale price.[5, 6, 7]

    1. Open the student and military discount page on microsoft.com and choose to check your eligibility.
    2. Enter the email address of your personal Microsoft account.
    3. Shop while signed in and confirm the lower price in your cart.
  2. Buy Certified Refurbished Surface or Xbox

Up to 30% below new on SurfaceLow effortAnyone open to a refurbished device

Microsoft's Certified Refurbished devices are screened, repaired, tested and cleaned, and arrive in their own box with the standard accessories and manuals. Refurbished Surface models are priced up to 30% below new, and through December 31 Microsoft takes at least 5% more off them (one offer per customer). The warranty is 12 months on Surface and 90 days on Xbox consoles, and the usual 60-day return policy applies.[1, 9]

  3. Trade in your old device for cash back

Trade-in value plus up to $500Some effortAnyone buying a new Surface Laptop or Surface Pro

The trade-in program is run by Teladvance: it values a used PC, laptop, phone, tablet or game console online, sends a prepaid label, and pays you within 14 days once the device is received, inspected and approved. Buy a new Surface Laptop or Surface Pro between October 1 and December 29, 2026 and submit the trade-in with your proof of purchase in that window, and Microsoft adds cash back of up to $500 — the amount depends on the device you bought and what your old one is worth.[1, 8]

    1. Once the new Surface ships, save the order details from Order history as a PDF — that's your proof of purchase.
    2. Get a value on the Teladvance trade-in page and upload the PDF.
    3. Ship the old device with the prepaid label within 15 days.
  4. Claim a price adjustment if the price drops

The difference back, once per productSome effortPhysical products bought from Microsoft Store

If Microsoft lowers the price of a qualifying physical product within 60 days of delivery, it refunds the difference. On new products it also matches a lower price for the identical, in-stock item at Best Buy or Amazon for Surface, and Best Buy, Amazon, Target, GameStop or Walmart for Xbox. For Microsoft's own price cuts, products bought October 1 to December 2, 2026 can be adjusted until January 31, 2027. Each product gets one adjustment, and the money goes back the way you paid.[1, 3]

    1. Keep an eye on the price for 60 days after your order arrives.
    2. Contact Microsoft Store Sales and Support with your order and, for a retailer match, the retailer's listing.
    3. Check the refund on your original payment method.
  5. Pay yearly for Microsoft 365, or share a Family plan

$19.89–$25.89 a year less than monthlyLow effortMicrosoft 365 subscribers

Microsoft 365 Personal costs $99.99 a year or $9.99 a month; Family costs $129.99 a year or $12.99 a month and covers 1 to 6 people, each on up to 5 devices at once, with 2 TB of shared cloud storage. Paying yearly saves $19.89 on Personal and $25.89 on Family against twelve monthly payments. Family's Copilot features stay with the subscription owner and can't be shared.[13]

6 rules · microsoft.com, United States

The rules that decide what you pay

What Microsoft Store says about shipping, returns, what can't be returned, refunds, price protection and promo codes — the details that turn a good deal into a bad one, or the other way round.

Shipping

Free 2–3 business day delivery, with no minimum order.

Express delivery in 1–2 business days costs $16.99. The US store ships only within the US and to Puerto Rico and needs a full street address. Orders placed on a weekend or holiday, or after 12 p.m. PST, are processed the next business day.[1, 4]

Returns

60 days from delivery for almost any physical product.

Send it back like new, in its original packaging, with every part, manual and document it came with; packaged software and games need their seal intact. Start from Order history with Request a return to print a free prepaid label. There's a limit of five product returns per order, items from a bundle go back together, and ROG Xbox Ally, ROG Xbox Ally X, Surface Hub, HoloLens and Windows DevKit are excluded.[2]

What can't be returned

Digital content, gift cards and customized products are final.

Apps, games, in-app content, subscriptions, movies and TV shows can't be returned unless the law gives you a refund right; digital games have their own refund request process. Gift cards and service or subscription cards, personalized or customized products, RAM, services already used, and clearance or Final Sale items are also excluded.[2, 12]

Refunds

To your original payment in about 3–5 business days.

The refund is the amount you paid minus any original shipping charge, such as Express — unless you're returning because you're unhappy with the license agreement or warranty. You can choose Microsoft Store credit instead. A promo code's value isn't refunded: you get back no more than you actually paid for the item.[2, 11, 12]

Price protection

One adjustment per product, requested within 60 days.

It can't be done at checkout, the item must still be in stock at Microsoft, and it covers the price only, not tax or shipping. Retailer matches exclude clearance, open-box and refurbished items, lightning and flash sales including Amazon Prime-exclusive offers, coupon and promo code prices, loyalty and card offers, bundles, prices shown only after logging in, and marketplace sellers. Microsoft may decline if it can't confirm the lower price.[3]

Promo codes

Entered at checkout while signed in; single-use unless stated.

The Add a promo code option appears only on the checkout page, after you've added shipping and payment details, and not in guest checkout. Unless a promotion's own terms say otherwise, a code is single-use, doesn't work on earlier orders, shipping or tax, and may not combine with other offers.[10, 11]

6 catches in the fine print

Watch out for

Where shoppers lose the saving they thought they had.

  1. Guest checkout can't take a promo code

To use a code you have to check out with a Microsoft account, and the code box only shows on the checkout page once shipping and payment are filled in.[10]

  2. The student and military discount doesn't stack

You get either the discount or the sale price, whichever is lower — never both. Xbox consoles, games and accessories, Microsoft 365, Windows and Surface for Business devices are excluded altogether.[5]

  3. Express shipping comes off a return refund

Microsoft keeps the original shipping charge when you return an item, so the $16.99 Express fee isn't refunded unless the return is about the license agreement or warranty.[2, 4]

  4. Trade-ins have a 15-day clock and are final

Ship the old device within 15 days of finishing the online trade-in. It has to power on, hold a charge, have no cracked screen, liquid damage or missing parts, not be password protected, and include its original charger; devices that fail can be recycled with no cash back.[8]

  5. Microsoft 365 renews at the regular price

Personal, Family and Premium plans renew automatically, at the regular price and for the term you picked, unless you cancel in your Microsoft account. If you only need a plan for a while, note when it renews.[13]

  6. Black Friday cuts may not be adjusted

Microsoft's Terms of Sale say price reductions and adjustments aren't available for clearance items or for limited-time cuts tied to special sale events such as Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Cyber Week. If a holiday deal undercuts what you paid, ask Microsoft before relying on a price adjustment.[12]

Within limits. For 60 days after delivery, Microsoft refunds the difference if it lowers its own price, or if Best Buy or Amazon (for Surface) or Best Buy, Amazon, Target, GameStop or Walmart (for Xbox) sells the identical new item for less and has it in stock. You claim it through Microsoft Store Sales and Support, and each product gets one adjustment.[3]

Microsoft's deals page says its 2026 Black Friday sale runs from November 19 to November 28. Physical products bought from October 1 through December 2, 2026 fall in the holiday window, so they can be returned, or adjusted if Microsoft lowers the price, until January 31, 2027.[1]
