1. Join Gold+ before you book

   Hertz Gold+ Rewards is free to join for anyone 21 or older. Members can book members-only rates with the Gold+ discount code (US and Canada only), skip the counter at select locations, and earn 1 point per $1 of the base rate — taxes, fees and extras earn nothing. In the US and Canada, a member's spouse or domestic partner can drive at no extra charge; Hertz's terms set the age for that at 25.^{[1, 2, 4, 5, 23]}

   2. Sign in before you search, so the member rate and your number go on the booking.
   3. Check in online to skip the counter where Hertz offers it.

   Hertz prints a promotion code (PC number) in the terms of each US offer. In October 2026 they included 210751 for one free day on rentals of 7+ days, 212157 for 10% off EV and hybrid rentals of 3+ days, 212131 for $50 off weekly SUV and minivan rentals, and 211748 for a free one-class upgrade from a medium sedan or higher — all for pickups through December 31, 2026. Each needs a reservation at least 24 hours ahead, discounts only the base rate, and can't be combined with another offer.^{[7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13]}

   1. Open the offer on Hertz's deals page and read its terms.
   2. Book from that page, or type the PC number in the discount field.
   3. Check that the discount shows on the rate before you confirm.

3. Pay Now when your dates won't change

   Hertz's Pay Now rate takes up to 25% off the Pay Later base rate in the US and Canada for pickups through December 31, 2026; the discount varies by location, dates and car class and doesn't apply in every case. The price of that saving: after the first 24 hours, cancelling costs up to $100, or up to $200 inside 24 hours of pickup, a no-show forfeits the whole prepaid amount, and unused days aren't refunded. Prepaid rates can't be combined with promotional offers, and debit cards aren't accepted for them.^{[8, 14, 15]}

4. Book with your AAA, USAA, military or Fifty+ code

   AAA members get up to 20% off Pay Later base rates, a free additional driver who is also a AAA member, 10% off prepaid fuel, a free child seat and no young renter fee at ages 20–24; Hertz's AAA offer goes up to 30% for bookings made by November 13, 2026. USAA members get up to 25% off base rates, a free second driver and no under-25 fee. Military leisure bookings carry a military CDP code with discounted rates and space-available upgrades, and Gold+ members aged 50+ can add the Fifty+ code for an extra 5% off.^{[24, 25, 26, 27, 29]}

5. Spend points on a week, not on single days

   On Hertz's rewards chart a standard car costs 950 points a day on Standard dates and 1,900 on Peak dates, but a one-week reward covers 5 to 7 days for 4,750 points — the same as five single days. Peak dates double every price, so compare dates before you redeem. Rewards need a reservation at least a day ahead in North America, and you still pay the taxes, fees and extras.^{[1, 3, 6]}

1. Opening the toll box buys PlatePass for the whole rental

   Slide open a car's transponder box and you're opted into PlatePass All-Inclusive tolling for every day of the rental, including the days before you opened it. Decline it and drive through cashless tolls anyway, and each usage day costs a $9.99–$13.99 convenience fee plus tolls at the highest undiscounted rate.^[19]

2. Prepaid fuel isn't refunded

   The Fuel Purchase Option charges for a full tank at pickup, and Hertz gives no refund for fuel you bring back. Without it, return the car at least as full as you got it, or a fuel and service charge is added.^{[18, 20, 21]}

3. Points vanish after 12 months without a rental

   Gold+ points last five years, but all of them are removed after twelve months with no rental activity. Booking with points only counts once that rental is completed, and transferring points to family doesn't count at all.^[1]

4. Pay Now and promo codes don't mix

   Prepaid rates can't be combined with any promotional offer, voucher or certificate, and Hertz's offer terms exclude Pay Now rates. Price the trip both ways — Pay Now alone, and Pay Later with a PC code — before you choose.^{[13, 14]}

5. Pay Now bookings are tied to one credit card

   Debit cards and Hertz credit cards aren't accepted for prepaid rates, and changes must go on the card you paid with — switching cards means cancelling, with the fees above. Within 24 hours of pickup, Hertz says it can't edit a Pay Now reservation and you have to contact it directly.^{[14, 16]}
