Ancestry Promo Codes & AncestryDNA Discounts

Six months of Ancestry paid upfront costs less than six monthly payments, and sales cut it further. Students pay $4.99 a month for World Explorer, military and teachers get six months of All Access for $199, and DNA regions and matches need no membership.

Does Ancestry have promo codes?

Ancestry's checkout has a Have a coupon? box, but the codes it issues, such as the student, teacher and military codes SheerID sends, are personal. Its public discounts appear as sale prices on ancestry.com instead: in October 2026 its Fall Family Sale cut six-month memberships and AncestryDNA kits.[1, 4, 6, 11]

Our verdict

Pay for six months upfront rather than monthly: World Explorer is regularly $179 for six months against $39.99 a month, and Ancestry's sales apply to this option. Students ($4.99 a month), military and teachers ($199 for six months of All Access) and AARP members (30% off the first year) should claim their rate before paying full price. A free trial and Ancestry's 14-day full refund don't stack: the refund only covers a first upfront subscription that didn't begin with a trial.

Ways to save at Ancestry

Ordered by what each is typically worth to a regular shopper — the biggest saving first.

  1. Pay for six months upfront instead of monthly

World Explorer: $179 vs $39.99 a monthLow effortAnyone researching for several months

At regular prices, six months paid in one go costs $119 for U.S. Discovery, $179 for World Explorer and $269 for All Access, against $24.99, $39.99 and $59.99 a month. The Fall Family Sale applied only to this option: on October 17, 2026 it cut six-month plans to $59, $84 and $129 for new and returning subscribers, until October 20 at 10am ET. A first upfront plan that didn't start with a trial also comes with Ancestry's 14-day refund window, and a sale price renews at list price unless Ancestry tells you otherwise.[1, 2, 3]

    1. Open Ancestry's membership page and look at the 6 month row.
    2. Choose Pay upfront where monthly payments are also offered.
    3. Note the renewal date and cancel at least two days before it if you don't want another six months.
  2. Try a membership free for 14 days

Two weeks of full accessLow effortOne free trial per user

Each of the three memberships can start with a two-week free trial that opens every record and feature of that plan. It needs a payment method and turns into the plan you picked, monthly or six-monthly; Ancestry's trial page and terms say to cancel at least two days before the trial ends, and cancelling ends the trial straight away. Compare first: on October 17, 2026 the trial page showed six months of World Explorer at $149 upfront, and a plan bought without a trial keeps the 14-day refund window.[2, 3, 10]

    1. Start the trial on Ancestry's free-trial page with the plan you'd actually keep.
    2. Put a reminder in your calendar a few days before day 14.
    3. Cancel in Account Settings with Cancel trial and keep the confirmation number.
  3. Students: get World Explorer for $4.99 a month

$4.99 a month instead of $39.99Some effortStudents at US Title IV colleges and universities

Ancestry sells World Explorer to US college students for $4.99 a month for 12 months, against a regular $39.99. SheerID checks your enrollment and emails a personal code, which you enter under Have a coupon? at checkout. You confirm your status again after each year, and the rate runs for up to four years in total; current members cancel first and join at the student price when their paid period ends.[11]

    1. Confirm your student status with SheerID from Ancestry's student discount page.
    2. Open the link in SheerID's email and enter your code under Have a coupon?
    3. Repeat the SheerID check every 12 months to keep the rate.
  4. Military, teachers and AARP members: claim a group rate

All Access for $199 per six months, or 30% offSome effortUS military, US school and college staff, AARP members

Active duty service members, veterans, reservists and National Guard members can get six months of All Access for $199 instead of $269 after a SheerID check, renewing at $199 every six months. Teachers, faculty and staff at US K-12 schools or Title IV colleges, aged 18 or over, get the same $199 price; it renews once, and they re-qualify every 12 months. AARP members save 30% on World Explorer or All Access for the first year — Ancestry's AARP page listed World Explorer at $27.99 a month or $233 for 12 months — and then pay the standard price.[12, 13, 14, 15]

  5. Share one All Access plan with up to four people

Five accounts on one membershipLow effortFamilies researching together in the US

All Access includes a family plan: up to 4 more people join at no extra cost, each with their own username, password and privacy settings, and Ancestry says that's cheaper than separate memberships. Family plans are only offered in the United States. Only the person who bought the plan can cancel it, and cancelling inside the refund window ends everyone's access at once.[1, 3, 16]

  6. Buy AncestryDNA in a sale, without a membership

Kit $99 regular; $34 in the sale to Oct 20, 2026Low effortAnyone taking a DNA test

AncestryDNA is regularly $99 ($119 with Traits); on October 17, 2026 the Fall Family Sale had the two at $34 and $44 until October 20 at 10am ET, with shipping extra. You don't need a membership to see your ancestral regions, journeys and DNA matches, message matches and view 3 traits. Viewing matches' family trees, ThruLines, common ancestors and the by-parent features takes an Ancestry family history membership.[4, 17]

6 rules · ancestry.com, United States

The rules that decide what you pay

What Ancestry says about cancellation, refunds, six months billed monthly, pausing, AncestryDNA refunds and AncestryDNA shipping — the details that turn a good deal into a bad one, or the other way round.

Cancellation

In Account Settings, at least two days before renewal.

Choose Cancel membership (or Cancel trial) and continue until you see a confirmation number. Ancestry's offer pages say to cancel at least two days before the renewal date, and its terms say two business days for monthly plans. Access lasts until the paid period ends, and your trees and DNA results stay in a free account.[1, 3, 7]

Refunds

None on monthly plans; 14 days on a first upfront plan.

Monthly memberships aren't refunded but stay active to the end of the paid month. On a plan longer than a month paid upfront, a first subscription that didn't begin with a trial can be cancelled within 14 days for a full refund, with access ending at once. There's no refund after a renewal or if you've subscribed before, and refunds go back to the original payment method.[3]

Six months billed monthly

Still a six-month commitment, with a cancellation fee.

Where Ancestry offers a six-month plan paid in monthly installments, you owe the whole term. Cancel early and you keep the months you've paid for, but on ancestry.com you're charged the lesser of $25 ($50 on 12-month plans) or what's left to pay. In the first 14 days of a first term that didn't start with a trial, you can cancel for a refund of the first month's payment.[2, 3]

Pausing

Push a renewal back by one or two months.

In Account Settings choose Cancel membership, then Pause membership, and pick 1 or 2 months; the pause starts when the current period ends, and the plan restarts by itself at the price it would have renewed at. While paused you keep your trees, DNA results and matches but can't open most records. Free trials, installment plans, family plans, gift memberships and app purchases can't be paused.[3, 9]

AncestryDNA refunds

Within 60 days of ordering, minus $15, kit returned.

Ask for a refund and send the kit back within 60 days of the order; Ancestry keeps a $15 processing fee and doesn't refund shipping. Kits bought from Amazon, Walmart, Legacy.com or Target.com are refunded by that seller. A package of a kit and a membership goes back only as a whole, within 60 days, with $15 deducted per kit.[3]

AncestryDNA shipping

$9.95 standard or $24.95 expedited, return included.

Within the US, standard USPS shipping is $9.95 for the first kit and $4.95 for each extra one; expedited Priority Mail is $24.95 and $12.95. Both cover mailing your sample back. Kits can't be bought in one country and sent to another, and a P.O. box takes no more than 2 kits per order.[5]

5 catches in the fine print

Watch out for

Where shoppers lose the saving they thought they had.

  1. Starting with a trial gives up the 14-day refund

Ancestry's 14-day full refund only applies to subscriptions that didn't begin with a free or paid trial. Once a trial has turned into a paid plan, the terms allow no refund.[3]

  2. Rejoining? There's no refund window

The terms rule out refunds for anyone who has subscribed to Ancestry before, and after any renewal. Sale prices can be open to returning subscribers, as October 2026's Fall Family Sale was, but the refund window isn't.[1, 3]

  3. The $1 membership in DNA packages renews at $99.95

On October 17, 2026 Ancestry's DNA page showed packages whose $1 membership renews automatically at $99.95 every 3 months with World Explorer, and at $149 every 3 months with All Access. If you only want the kit, cancel at least two days before the renewal date.[1, 4]

  4. Deleting the app doesn't cancel anything

Uninstalling the Ancestry app leaves the membership running, and cancelling one membership doesn't stop another on the same or a second account. Memberships bought in the app are billed by Apple, Google or Amazon, whose own cancellation deadlines apply.[8, 9]

  5. Sale and introductory prices last one term

Ancestry's offer terms say a discounted plan renews at list price after the first term unless you're told otherwise. Prices for renewals can change with reasonable notice, so check the amount before your renewal date.[1, 2, 3]

Ancestry savings FAQ

Ancestry's checkout has a Have a coupon? box, but the codes it issues, such as the student, teacher and military codes SheerID sends, are personal. Its public discounts appear as sale prices on ancestry.com instead: in October 2026 its Fall Family Sale cut six-month memberships and AncestryDNA kits.[1, 4, 6, 11]

Ancestry cuts the kit price directly in its sales — to $34 from $99 in October 2026's Fall Family Sale — with shipping extra. A friend's AncestryDNA referral link gives a discount on one kit, taken off the $99 full price rather than a sale price, and AARP members can add a kit for $69 when they buy a membership.[4, 14, 20]

Yes. Students at US Title IV colleges and universities can get World Explorer for $4.99 a month for 12 months after a SheerID check. They confirm their status again each year, for up to four years.[11]

Yes. Active duty members, veterans, reservists and National Guard members can get six months of All Access for $199 instead of $269, renewing at $199 every six months. US teachers get the same $199 six-month price, and AARP members get 30% off for the first year.[12, 13, 15]

A free Registered Guest account lets you build and share family trees, search Ancestry's free record collections, register an AncestryDNA kit and see your results and matches; most other records need a membership. Ancestry also provides AncestryLibrary for on-site use in libraries and HeritageQuest Online, which libraries offer on site or remotely, and AncestryClassroom costs nothing for accredited K-12 schools.[18, 19]

Go to Account Settings, choose Cancel membership or Cancel trial, and continue until you get a confirmation number, at least two days before the renewal date. For a one- or two-month break instead, choose Pause membership on the same screen.[1, 7, 9]

Only in narrow cases. Monthly plans aren't refunded, while a first upfront plan longer than a month that didn't start with a trial can be cancelled for a full refund within 14 days. AncestryDNA kits can be returned within 60 days of ordering, minus a $15 fee.[3]

In the US, standard USPS shipping is $9.95 for the first kit and $4.95 for each extra kit, or $24.95 and $12.95 expedited. The price includes the prepaid return of your sample.[5, 6]

No. Your ancestral regions, journeys, DNA matches and 3 traits are visible without one. Viewing matches' family trees, ThruLines, common ancestors, more traits and the by-parent features needs a family history membership; extra traits also come with an AncestryDNA + Traits kit.[17, 18]
