The rules that decide what you pay

What Staples says about shipping, returns, non-returnable items, refunds, coupons and price match — the details that turn a good deal into a bad one, or the other way round.

Shipping

Free next-day delivery over $35 or on ink and toner.

Staples delivers Monday to Friday, excluding holidays, to street addresses in the contiguous US only — not to P.O. boxes or APO/FPO addresses. Custom, special-order and backordered items, some furniture and items shipped by outside vendors don't get next-business-day delivery. A handling fee, where it applies, shows on the product page and at checkout; carrier fees show in the cart and order summary.[9, 10, 11]

Returns

Office supplies any time; tech, small appliances and furniture within 14 days.

Computers, laptops, printers, tablets, digital cameras and small appliances go back within 14 days of receipt; furniture also has 14 days and must be taken apart and safe to ship. Unopened, unexpired ink and toner can be returned at any time, Staples-brand products within a year, and unopened boxed software within 30 days. Online orders can be returned to any Staples store with the receipt or packing slip.[12]

Non-returnable items

Opened software, gift cards and inflated balloons can't go back.

Opened boxed software and downloads can't be returned, nor can gift, prepaid and phone cards, inflated balloons or balloon tanks; custom-ordered furniture only if it arrives defective. Halloween costumes must be unopened and back before October 31 of the year you bought them. An in-store purchase returned without a receipt gets store credit at the lowest price of the last 30 days, with a government-issued ID.[12]

Refunds

Coupons and points are taken off what you get back.

If an order used a coupon, its value can be spread across all the items, so each refund is what you paid after the discount, and the coupon can't be used again. Points earned on a returned item are deducted — if your balance can't cover them, Staples can cut your refund. Card refunds take 3–5 business days after the return reaches the warehouse.[5, 12]

Coupons

Up to five per order; minimum spends count regular-priced items only.

A transaction coupon's minimum spend has to be met with regular-priced products that no other coupon or instant savings already discounts, before tax and shipping. Standard coupon terms exclude a long list of technology — computers, tablets, ink and toner, HP printers, Apple and Samsung products and more — plus gift cards and services. Coupons expire at 12:00 a.m. EST, and each can be used only once.[2, 3]

Price match

One match per item per day, on the pre-tax price.

Staples matches the competitor's price before tax and won't waive sales tax; if the competitor needs a minimum quantity, you buy the same quantity. Staples.com doesn't match Staples store prices, except on orders picked up in store. Warranties, gift cards, services, clearance, competitors' mail-in rebates and holiday offers such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday are excluded.[7]

Watch out for

Where shoppers lose the saving they thought they had.

  1. Tech and furniture have only 14 days

    Office supplies can go back at any time, but computers, printers, tablets, small appliances and furniture have 14 days from receipt. Set up and check them as soon as they arrive.[12]

  2. Codes copied from other websites can be refused

    Staples' coupon terms let it reject orders that use a code taken from a bulletin board or another website, and charge your card for a coupon it disallows. Stick to coupons Staples publishes or sends you.[2]

  3. Most tech is outside the standard coupon terms

    Computers, tablets, ink and toner, HP printers, Apple and Samsung products, gaming consoles, software and warranties are all excluded from Staples' standard transaction and product coupons. Read each coupon's details before you count on it.[2]

  4. Returns take back points — even below zero

    When a refund is processed, every point earned on the returned item is deducted, including points from special offers. If that leaves a negative balance, Staples can reduce the refund to match.[5]

  5. Redeeming in store needs the app or a photo ID

    At a store register, you either scan the digital Easy Rewards card in the Staples app or give your phone number and show a government-issued photo ID with the same name as the account. Without one of those, you can't redeem points.[4, 5]

Yes, within 48 hours: contact Staples customer service and they can apply it to the order. Expired coupons can't be reissued, and each coupon works only once.[2, 3]

Most online orders can be cancelled within 30 minutes from Recent Orders in your account, or by order number and delivery zip code if you checked out as a guest. After 30 minutes the Cancel option disappears.[13]
